Neo-Byzantine or Romano-Byzantine style
Architectural style and artistic movement that developed from the second half of the 19th century onwards. It draws its sources and inspiration from medieval Byzantine architecture, with its centered plan and domes, stucco or mosaic decorations and the use of gold backgrounds.
The Holy Trinity
Representation of the mysterious reality of a single God in the loving unity of three distinct, equal and indivisible persons, the Father, the Son and the Spirit. Christians have come to understand the depth of this revelation through the teachings and life of Jesus.
Alpha and omega
First and last letters of the Greek alphabet, applied to God or Christ in the Book of Revelation (1:8 and 22:13). They present God in his eternity (he is, he was and he is to come), and symbolize the wholeness of Christ (the first and the last) as the beginning and the end of everything.
Dove
Symbolizes the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. At Christ’s Baptism, the four Gospels (Mt 3:16 – Mk 1:10 – Lk 3:22 – Jn 1:32) mention the Spirit descending and abiding on Christ in the form of a dove. The Council of Nicaea (325) declared the dove to be a valid symbol of the Spirit.
The Burning Bush (Exodus 3, 2.4.6.)
An episode in the Bible in which Moses has a vision of an Angel in the flames spouting from a burning bush that does not burn. God then calls him and reveals himself to him from the middle of the bush. The image of fire symbolizes the Spirit sent by God as a burning fire that sets the heart of man ablaze.
Dome on pendentives
Hemispherical vault covering a vast square space, supported by arches. The pendentives, concave triangular masonry built into the corners, allow the transition from circular to square form and support the arches.
Symbols of the four evangelists or tetramorph
4 animal and human representations taken from the vision of the 4 living creatures by the prophet Ezekiel in the Bible (Ezek 1:1-14). They symbolize the 4 evangelists in relation to the beginning of each gospel: the lion for Mark, the bull for Luke, the man for Matthew and the eagle for John.
Holy Spirit
Christian theology recognizes the Holy Spirit as the 3rd person of the Trinity, the mysterious reality of a single God in the loving unity of three distinct, equal and indivisible persons: Father, Son and Spirit.
Pentecost
From the Greek pentêkostê, fiftieth, an event that took place fifty days after Easter and the resurrection of Christ, marking the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. This gift of the Spirit was manifested “by fire divided into tongues” (Acts 2:1-14).
Marcel Imbs (1882-1935)
Painter and mosaicist, student of Luc-Olivier Merson, member of the Artisans de l’Autel and the Dominican Third Order. He devoted himself to religious painting, creating cartoons for oratory, chapel and church mosaics and working on the mosaics for the Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre.
